The walls are a crucial component of this film, which shows the daily details of the life of an upwardly mobile Nazi couple – the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig – and their five children in German-occupied Poland in the summer of 1943. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine that just a hair’s breadth away from the peaceful and idyllic Höss household, the unimaginable horrors of the Final Solution are unfolding in full swing. And as noisome fumes and muffled, blood-curdling noises blemish Hedwig’s fragrant utopia, the question Glazer’s remarkable film raises in the viewer is, “What atrocities do our comfortable lives allow us to ignore?”
