In this very Japanese paean to the joys of food, trucker Goro rides into town like a modern Shane to help Tampopo, the owner of a struggling diner. The movie is constructed as a series of episodes along the route to the perfect noodle restaurant. The social critique in “Tampopo” animates every scene, and it accounts for why — even in an era of celebrity chefs, food-porn Instagram accounts and cookery-as-contact-sport reality shows — the movie has lost none of its power to revivify the senses, not least of all one’s sense of humor. This is a very funny movie.
