In a Norwegian city with a 24-hour daylight cycle a Swedish murder investigator has been brought in on a special case. Sleep deprived, he makes a horrible mistake which is discovered by the killer he has been hunting, and a double sided game of cat-and-mouse ensues. Taut and chilly, Insomnia is a solid showcase for Stellan Skarsgård’s estimable acting — and a brilliant debut for director Erik Skjoldbjærg. This film was remade with a Hollywood cast in the early 2000s, but you owe it to yourself to see the original which immerses viewers in the unique cultural context of Norway and the breathtaking landscapes of the Arctic Circle.
