Werewolf

Friday March 10 at 7:00 PM

“Werewolf”
Directed by Ashley McKenzie
Drama, 80 min

(Preceded by the short film, “Untitled”)

Blaise and Nessa, a methadone-addicted couple born, raised, and trapped in Cape Breton are the heart-rending subjects of Ashley McKenzie’s deeply personal film. While Blaise uses cynicism as an excuse for his behaviour, Nessa’s slow transformation toward independence is thwarted by her relationship with Blaise and the decaying environment around her: a clinic hooks addicts on methadone without treating the causes of substance abuse and the eroding town alienates the couple from the very few economic opportunities available. Werewolf, among the greatest Canadian debuts of the decade, has enough empathy, insights and raw power to shred the veil separating the viewer from the ‘other.’
